A walk around Palmerston

Saturday June 27

I decided to walk around the island today, to see how long it took. But after stopping to chat all the time, I ended up having no idea. I had a drink of fresh coconut with Inangaro, who is here on Palmerston for seven months with her husband, Tuakeu, and their gorgeous little girl, Trinity, whom you can see in the photo. They come from Mitiaro - another outer island - and Tuakeu is the builder on a couple of projects here.
Then, as I walked on further around the island, it started to rain a little; and Mama Orometua, the pastor's wife, waved me into her kikau hut. The roof had been leaking a little bit and she had been putting a tarpaulin over it. She told me a long, long story about her life while the wind howled outside, the tarpaulin flapping loudly. The trade winds are blowing strongly and have not stopped, day or night.
